Background
For those interested in joining a league team, this often means first joining a private club. This is because it takes a fair bit of organization, and enough tennis courts, to run teams.
Those in the City of Folsom are fortunate to have some choices. One option is to join Broadstone, as they run a wide range of USTA and SATA teams. The other option is to participate on one of the many teams that play on our local public courts, most often at Ed Mitchell Park.
There are between 25 and 30 USTA and SATA teams running on our local public courts annually. This was not always the case, and as recently as 2002 there were no league teams on our public courts. As the graph above depicts, things have changed, in a big way!
Volunteer Driven
Our public court league teams are 100% volunteer driven. Volunteers captain the teams, coordinate schedules with other team captains, schedule around the city's use of the courts and manage court calendars.
Along with the participation growth and success come challenges. Team rosters are very full, and court scheduling time gets tighter each year. Most team captains have waiting lists for players wanting to join a team.
Getting Onto A Team
If you have been working hard on your skills, and you are honed for some friendly competition, there may be a team waiting for you! Because the teams are run by a wide range of volunteers, there is no formal signup or waiting list. Instead, you need to make contact with the current players and team captains to see if there is an opening on an appropriate team.
Before you join a team, make sure to get a feel for how players are scheduled. While most team captains work hard to make sure everyone on their teams receive play time during a season, there are some teams that only play their best players, leaving others to watch. Make sure you get onto the type of team that fits your goals.
For our Community Tennis Player Network members we offer an online League Team Interest Form you can complete. Completed forms are sent to appropriate team captains for their consideration. We, at this website, do not run the teams or tell the captains how to pick players. So, please understand that we simply facilitate a way for interested members to make contact with team captains.
